Cookbooks

It's no secret I am a cookbook fan.
I collect cookbooks for various reasons.
Sometimes a book tells a story with the shared recipes.
Sometimes I buy them as a remembrance of a place I have traveled.
But for the most part, I'll be drawn in by the recipes and the photographs of the food.
I have been known not to purchase a specific cookbook based on the fact that there are no pictures of the food.

These are just a few of my favorites

'The Farm Chicks In The Kitchen'

Not only are there delicious recipes inside, but crafty projects galore.

Embellished Dishtowel how to...

Food Covers...

And who can resist Susan Branch...
 'Vineyard Seasons' by Susan Branch
'Girlfriends Forever'-Besides being a  'Girl Food' cookbook, it is filled with stories of girlfriends.

I adore Susan's art work. I'm sure I have every book she has ever published.

Alisa Barry 'La Bella Vita'
Alisa tells of her story in traveling to Italy, and how she fell in love, with not only the food, but the people, the landscape, and the language, but most of all the love of simple fresh food.

You can almost taste the fresh basil and mozzarella.
I have used the recipe for 'Pane' basic bread dough a hundred times.

Sweets
'Soul Food Desserts & Memories'
 by Patty Pinner.
Patty was raised in a small town in Michigan.
Patty tells of spending her childhood helping the women of the house,
the 'Queens Of Soul Food'.
She shares her family's stories, part recipe and part history.

Who can resist the Pioneer Woman's
Simple Perfect Chili?

My kitchen would not be complete without Ina Garten -The Barefoot Contessa.

Ina's introductions are such a joy to read.
In her book 'barefoot contessa at home' she begins by saying that she didn't always know how to make a home. Her philosophy is this...
'A good home should gather you up in its arms like a warm cashmere blanket, soothe your hurt feelings, and prepare you to go back out into that big bad world tomorrow all ready to fight the dragons'.
Ina talks about table setting, gathering family and friends, lighting candles and good music at any social gathering to set the mood.
Just reading her cookbooks makes me want to have a party.

Positively, my favorite COMFORT food cookbook is the cookbook
I purchased when Beth and I went to Williams-Sonoma for a cooking class.
There is not a single recipe contained within that I would NOT cook from this book.
I've cooked almost all of them, and each and every one of them are heavenly.
As a matter of fact I am making Chicken Pot Pie this week.

This is/was my very FIRST cookbook. It was a wedding gift in 1976, the first time I marred Caveman.
I used it for many, many, years. While it does not host any photographs, I adore it none the less.
It has a special place in my heart.
A gentle reminder of a young bride who married very young, and knew absolutely nothing about cooking.
The pages are soft and well worn, full of stains and some small tears.
My Aunt & Uncle who gifted this to me are no longer here on this earth, but I am reminded of them each time I look through the pages.

Brillat-Savarin wrote:
'The pleasures of the table are for every man, of every land, and no matter of what place in history or society; they can be part of all his other pleasures, and they last the longest to console him when he has outlived the rest'

Tell me...do you have a favorite cookbook?

Dessert

My dear friend, Diana, hosted a 'June Birthday' luncheon at her home today.

I made
Cake In A Jar for dessert.
It was fun to make, easy to serve, and easy to take home. Bake a Chocolate Sheet Cake  (let it cool completely), then cut the cake into circles (I used the rim of a cup) to fit inside the half-pint canning jars. Start by laying a circle of the cake at the bottom of the jar, then some Butter Cream frosting, another layer of cake, fresh sliced strawberries (slightly sugared), fresh whipped cream, then add a few fresh (un-sugared) strawberry slices to the very top. Put the lid on the jar and you can decorate the jar to your liking.
Dessert ready to go.

It was a wonderful afternoon spending time with some very special friends.

June is a very good month

November 22nd: All Clad

I bought a 23.25 lb turkey (usually I go for the 18-20lb one). I stared at the turkey lying in the refrigerator, and the thought crossed my mind that perhaps such a large turkey was not going to fit into my roasting pan. The same roasting pan I have used since the beginning of time, you know the black ones with the little white spots, you see all the time. Seems to me I inherited the roaster pan from a family member years ago.

I guessed right, there was no way this turkey was going to fit in the old roaster.

I've had my eye on the All Clad Stainless Steel Roaster for some time now, each year wishing for it more and more. Every trip to Williams-Sonoma drew me to the shiny roaster.

Today I gave in......................
She's shiny, smooth and sturdy, and I can hardly wait to take her for a "spin" on Thursday.
(geez- you'd think I bought a new car or something)
It has a rack and turkey forks to accompany it.

Do you think I bought too large of a turkey intentionally?

Hello

This week has been busy.
I gave the front porch a Fall face lift.

On Sunday I went to Williams-Sonoma for the stew cooking class. It was informative, fun and relaxing to get out of the country for a day. Beth and I drove the 1 hour drive to the Galleria Mall in Roseville. We shopped and shopped, then enjoyed a yummy lunch at the Cheese Cake Factory when we were done shopping.
Of course, I got a cookbook at Williams-Sonoma:

See that chicken pot pie on the cover? I made them for dinner on Monday. It rained all day Monday so it was the perfect weather for doing such a thing. My pot pies were not as perfect looking as this one from the cover, but yummy none the less.
Did I forget to mention that I got new bowls at Williams-Sonoma too?

Then I baked a chocolate cake:
I've used the same recipe for decades. It is on the back of the Hershey's Cocoa can:

After Monday's rain the weather was beautiful. I planted the plants I got at the Butte College annual Fall plant sale.

Earlier this year I planted a bed of Nastursuims

A very sweet Sweet Pea bush:
All in all this has been a good week. Wonderful weather. Lots done outside. I have a green house I bought during the Summer and will be working on getting that assembled and up for the colder months ahead.

I'm itchin to start an indoor project.
Aprons, maybe a new quilt or two.

I'm hosting a Stampin Up party in November. I bought stamps years ago from this company. The demonstrator, Alex, is charming. I just met her and it felt like we were just old friends.  My oh my...they have amazing things now. I am really excited and think I have found yet another craft to occupy my time, and invade my already filled project "to-do" list. I'll just rename the list "Do What I Want To Do" list.

Cookbook Obsession

I'm just a wee bit obsessed with cookbooks, ok maybe more than just a bit.
Recently, I added a few new cookbooks, to my already bulging cabinet.
With these...
and this...

and this...

I'm very particular about the books I choose. Great food pictures are a must. I like them to contain stories about family and food.
I really do actually use them, and read the stories.
On Saturday
I made Flat Apple Pie from the Pioneer Woman Cookbook:

p.s. I also made the PW Perfect Pot Roast for dinner.
MY SPECIAL HELPER ♥ for the crust.

Mixing up the apples.

Yummy!
Sunday we made Lemon Meringue Pie:
Cud'n Ferland's Lemon Meringue Pie
(from the Sweet's Book)

I love the stories in this book.

Yummy too!
On Sunday I will be heading to Williams-Sonoma for a cooking class on stews.
Maybe I'll even bring home a new cookbook!
